Meet the Artist: Amy Loewan

Join the Art Gallery of St. Albert as we visit Art Rental and Sales artist Amy Loewan’s studio!

Loewan is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and passionate instructor who has been based in Edmonton since 1978. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta and now teaches visual arts with the U of A’s Faculty of Extension. In addition to numerous awards and honours she was inducted into the City of Edmonton’s Art & Culture Hall of Fame in 2012.

Loewan’s artwork is often mixed-media and interdisciplinary. She has an extensive background in drawing, watercolour and oil painting and has used a variety of media to create large-scale installations.

Much of her work has been created to “promote peace, harmony and understanding”. A 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵, created in 2001, transformed sheets of rice paper into woven strips of words promoting peace in over 35 languages. Another project, 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦, created a fully realized home constructed of rice paper and maple, inlaid with viewer’s thoughts on peace. Loewan’s 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 series explores an inner spiritual peace and each piece uses numerous washes of luminous colour and geometric forms to create a meditative experience.
