Archives Intern at the Musée Héritage Museum    

Job Type: Term position: 34 weeks (Jul/Aug. 2016 to Mar. 2017)

Hours: Monday to Friday (35 hours weekly)

Hourly wage: $20/hr. + Mandatory employer benefits

Department: Archives at Musée Héritage Museum, St. Albert, AB.

Reports to: Archivist                

Job Description:

The Musée Héritage Museum Archives has served as St. Albert’s community based archives since its inception in 1984. The City of St. Albert regularly transfers records to the museum’s archives. Over the past year, the archives obtained a large transfer of records from the City of St. Albert that needs to be processed. Records from the following city departments will need to be processed: Finances, City Manager, Mayor’s Office, Planning and Development, Legal, and Legislative Services. The archives also has a number of records from significant sports events and sports associations in St. Albert that need to be processed.

The records include textual materials, photographs, maps, and other materials that need to be processed in compliance with the Rules for Archival Description (RAD). Some of the sports related materials have working descriptions. We need to have all of the materials housed properly for long-term preservation and appraised, arranged, and described so that it is made available to the public.


  • Assisting the archivist in appraisal of records
  • Arranging and describing records according to the Rules for Archival Description
  • Researching St. Albert’s history and various sports associations for purposes of archival description
  • Re-housing archival records for preservation
  • Creating finding aids
  • Entering descriptions into the online archival database
  • Digitizing selected materials, which includes scanning to archival standards, labelling, entering metadata


  • Recent university or college graduate in Archival Studies within the last 2 years
  • Excellent knowledge of archival theory
  • Familiarity with RAD and proper care of archival materials
  • Familiarity with AtoM or other archival databases
  • Good computer skills, including working knowledge of Mac OS and Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with Photoshop and scanning photographs is an asset
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Previous experience working in an archives or museum is an asset
  • Familiarity with Alberta history and Aboriginal history are assets
  • Proficiency in French is an asset
