Smoke, as described by artist Doug Fraser, captures the brilliant red-orange sun in a smoky sky inspired by [the] intense sunsets in the pall of smoke that covered the Prairies from Edmonton to Kenora in June 2015.

The technique used to execute the work comes from the tradition of colour field painting. This abstract style of painting is characterised by large areas of colour spread over a flat surface. Colour is the primary subject matter of such paintings, with form playing a lesser role. In Fraser’s Smoke, the vibrancy of the red-orange circle demands focus, drawing the viewer’s eye away from the smoky haze. As the viewer pulls back from the painting an after-image appears. This ring of blue transforms the painting from a simple skyscape into a study of complimentary colours and how they form in the human eye.

Smoke, like all works in the Rental & Sales Gallery inventory, is best viewed in person. Drop in during regular Gallery hours or contact rentalsales@artsandheritage.ca to make an appointment.
