In Bi-Pass #2, Kowalski challenges perspective by allowing the subterranean to dominate the frame. This shift in conventional looking enhances the ambiguity of the image. This viewer reads the lithograph in two sections; mountain peaks in the top quarter, below ground in the rest. Horizontal bands relate to the definition of “bypass” as a road providing an alternate route, a way around the mountains. The image produces an alternative interpretation of “bypass” as the lower band pulsates across the page like the flow of blood through veins. The allusion to an oft-life-saving surgical procedure turns sinister by the appearance of a skull-like shape in the darkest part of the print.
