Painter Peter Ivens describes himself as a student of the natural world. His classroom comprises the rivers, mountains and skies surrounding his home in the Bow River Valley. His practice is an evolving study of the wonders of nature, and his works respond to the ever-changing landscapes of colour, water and light in the Alberta wilderness.
Recently Ivens has sought balance between imminence and deliberation in his paintings. He has explored new possibilities through immediacy, without agenda and with a responsive attitude to each new work.
Ivens creates energetic, animates images that communicate not only the vibrancy of his subject, but also the energy of the creative process. His multifaceted approach combines staining, pouring, under-painting, impasto, glazing and a variety of painting tools (palette knives, sprayers, and assorted drawing media).
Ivens seeks to halt time and capture the essence of fleeting moments through his re-evaluation of painting. He is interested in capturing the spirit of his subjects and, less so, in creating an exact likeness. Ivens achieves profound understanding and depth in his active and fluid paintings that describe the natural environment with stunning lyrical effect.
